Today we went to the Carriage Hill farm. Before we left, we listened to a story about farm life. This was to prepare us for what we might see at Carriage Hill. The ride to Carriage Hill was long. I enjoyed looking out the window and talking to my friends. I watched as the scenery turned from urban city to rural country. When we got to Carriage Hill, Ms. Kancler explained places that we could go that we might find interesting. My friends and I first went to the big red barn. At the barn, we saw many different farm animals. Two chickens and a Guinea Fowl greeted us. Seeing the chickens and Guinea Fowl made me happy. My family and I were going to get a Guinea Fowl so that it could protect our other chickens. Because of my previous knowledge about Guinea Fowl, I kept my distance. Guinea Fowl have a tendency to be quite protective and a bit aggressive. We also saw three giant pigs. Many flies were around these pigs. The pigs did not seem to care. Two of them were sleeping and the third was wondering around. After adventuring inside the barn, we realized one thing; it smelled awful. I suspect life on farm might not be the cleanest. The main scent we smelled was horse manure. The smell was so powerful that it was almost unbearable. We quickly left the barn after venturing through it. My friend and I decided to take a walk around the back path. The path we went on circled around a large lake. There was about four older men fishing in the pond. My friend and I sat there for a while, listening to the wind and watching the large lake. After watching the animals and enjoying the view of the lake, I can understand why living on a farm can make you live more deliberately. Taking care of animals gives people a purpose. At the beginning of this STEMersion, I came up with a response as to what I believed living deliberately meant. I said that to live deliberately, one must have a goal and purpose in mind. Farmers have the goal of keeping their animals healthy. The animals also rely on the farmers to keep them alive and healthy. Even if the farmer is using the animals for meat, they still must take care of them. Living on a farm allows farmers to have a goal and purpose. Because of these reasons, living on a farm allows one to live more deliberately.

Farm Life Writing Piece

The sun rises and shines on the face of the coop. Rooster is already crowing. His loud voice carries throughout the farm waking the rest of the hens and animals around. Rooster is quite obnoxious. His favorite thing to do is strut around the farm, acting as if he owns the place. I jump down from the roost, heading towards the nesting boxes. Every day I have to lay an egg. My eggs are a deep shade of brown with splotches of white. I know I have to lay an egg every day; if I do not, I may die. Last season, a Hen died because she was egg bound. Hens around all know the tedious task of laying their eggs. Rooster chooses a select few Hens that he likes. Those Hens lay eggs with babies in them. After finishing my egg laying, I make my way to the outside pen. Farmer usually comes around this time. The sun still shines, casting a shadow on the feeder. I see Farmer heading towards us. The majority of the Hens are now out. When Farmer comes, he collects all the eggs that Hens are not sitting on. He then opens the gates so that we can go into the Outers. The day is warm; dew sticks to the grass like broken egg to the hay. Throughout the day, everyhens main goal is to forage for food. When it rains, worms come up from the ground. At that time, food is abundant. Farmer only feeds us this dry grain. It tastes bland and hard. The day progresses like usual. When it is time to go back into the coop, the sun is beginning to set. Rooster is the last to go into the coop. He lets out one last obnoxious crow. Farmer closes the gate and by then, the sun has disappeared.
